Year in advance predictions

Here are a few of my predictions for 2008 for some stocks.  Please don’t listen or take my opinion for anything more than semi-interesting thoughts, though next year I’ll go over my predictions and let you know how I did, rubbing them all in your face (please don’t cache this page, as I will make changes throughout the year to be more right).

MRVL will be sub-$10, with the only potential of success being if INTC were to buy them.  Though INTC wouldn’t gain much more than a select customer base if they were to buy them.

MMTIF should make some money on their patents and could be bought out or taken private, but that’s a long shot (I’ve followed MMTIF for so many years it’s really stupid).

GS will take a beating the first part of the year (think $160’s) and will head upward the second part of the year (think $250’s).

Watch for C and MER to hit new 52-week lows in the beginning of the year, later in the year rising up over 25% from their lows.

WFC and BAC and WM will all realize that pain isn’t over and will see some consolidation as the only savior.  If they stay apart the external funding will stop coming in and all of their stock prices will be down at least 20% from where it is.

Solars (SOLF, ESLR, FSLR) will start to consolidate, maybe with a merger of two of the companies.  FSLR could buy ESLR or SOLF or some overseas solar company in an all stock deal which will wind up hurting FSLR’s stock price.

AMZN will admit they are full of crap and their profits were just an accounting accident, maybe they will stop trying to take on other companies and their key successes, eventually ending up within 10% of where they are at the end of this year.

AAPL will drop in stock price the first quarter of the year and will eventually go back up, ending the year around $180 (this is next year, not this year).

RIMM will be dropped by the hedge funds (which will concentrate on the solars more) and will end the year at $70-$80 range, which is way more than it should be anyway.  RIMM will not come out with any new technology unless they can get an agreement with a company like HTC and get a touch screen.  AAPL will fail to bring a business-class device to battle RIMM in their key demographic, but there will be another company to challenge RIMM’s space (MOT?).

SHLD, JCP, TGT, WMT will all climb back to all-time highs.  The recession will be over with (you never know when the recession starts, you only know after it started) and consumers will be spending lots of money in the retailers.

MA will split and hit new highs, just because America is gluttonous and spends stupidly.  Also, I might have paid off my MA card by the end of the year, which is saying something impressive since I owe more than I make.

GOOG will be in the $800’s unless they finally have a stock split.  If they split, watch for a huge run up and than a split, than a pitiful fall.

BIDU will be approaching GOOG levels, maybe hitting $500-$600 areas.

YHOO will be around where it is now, finding success in their current area.  The stock will fluctuate throughout the year, but there will not be any previously-rumored takeover or buyout.

GM will have lost it’s number one position to TM, but will have found a new high for it’s stock pricing.  Focusing on quality over quantity will work out in their advantage.

Watch the airlines to make a change of direction, heading higher towards mid-year.  This will be a sign that the recession we were in has passed.  Stocks that will make the best moves will be the low cost flight stocks first, followed by the rest (JBLU, LUV, AMR, NWAC, UAIRQ, CAL, SKYW, AAI).

Watch for BMY to continue another year without being bought out by SNY.  DNDN will get back over the $10.00 level, but might struggle to get there.  AMGN will turn back into the positive direction, maybe by the first quarter of the year.  BAX will go onto make new highs, watch for a yearly high of $67.  NBIX will turn around operations and rise back to decent levels, maybe breaking the $20 level (okay, that’s more of a hope than a prediction).

Gold will be higher, making the $900 $1,000 level.

Oil will surpass $100.00 barrel.

Metals will exceed the highs they’ve made, China will continue to grow and consume large quantities of all resources.

Well, I’m not sure what else to touch upon.  Let me know your thoughts on anything I touched upon, I’m curious about all of your predictions also.

  1. [...] positions quick. The DJI is down over 185 points, gold is at $999 (though it passed $1,000 which I predicted it would as a new year prediction - more on that later). GOOG and BIDU will open lower, same with [...]
